Ansel Adams

A premier fine art photographer of the 20th century, Ansel Adams is most well known for his black and white photographs of America’s national parks, celebrating Yosemite and the vast Western wilderness. His works are eloquently rendered in their use of light, texture and form. Adam’s photographic career spanned more than 60 years.

In 1927, he began to build his expansive portfolio of photographs, which included his famous image “Monolith,” the vertical western face of Half Dome taken with his Korona view camera utilizing glass plates and a dark red filter (to heighten the tonal contrasts). He quickly rose to be a technical innovator in the landscape photography field, perfecting the ability to determine the visual and emotional qualities of the print even before exposing the negative.

Adams was also one of the original crusaders in the environmental and conservation movements, holding many positions of distinction including Director of the Sierra Club from 1934 to 1971. His works have been exhibited at nearly every major museum, including The The Museum of Modern Art, and Metropolitan Museum of Art. He has authored more than thirty books and seven portfolios of original prints.
